Reducing the Stress of Moving: Tips for Moving With Peace of Mind

Does the idea of moving cause you to experience dread, stress, and anxiety? If your answer to that question is yes, don’t worry; you’re not alone. Packing up everything you own into boxes, putting those boxes on a moving truck, and then doing the entire process in reverse at your new house is enough to make many people rethink whether their move is actually worth it. There’s good news, though. Even if you can’t make your next move stress-free, you might be able to make it significantly less stressful than you think it’s going to be.

Failure to Plan Is Planning to Fail

Failing to plan is the same as planning to fail. While the old saying may not have been talking about moving, it definitely applies. Even before you start packing boxes, you need to put a plan in place.

Part of this plan should include a timeline. Pick a date when you’ll start going through things and deciding what’s going to your new house and what you’re leaving behind, giving away, or throwing out.

Procrastination Is Never a Good Idea

Whether you’re moving out of a rental or selling your house to move into a new one, you know when you need to be out of your home. Your move-out date has probably been set in stone for a while, but waiting until a day or two before that date to start the moving process guarantees a stressful move.

Don’t be afraid to start early. If you’re moving in the middle of summer, get those winter clothes packed in boxes since you’re not using them anyway. Go through your house and look for things that you haven’t been using and aren’t likely to need between that date and the day that you move out. Getting a few boxes packed and prepped for the move is better than doing nothing until the last minute.

Don’t Pack Away Your Label Maker; Use It Instead

Getting out of your house is going to be stressful enough. There’s absolutely no need to make your move-in a problem, too. One of the best ways to make the move-in process smoother is to label the boxes you’re packing as you’re filling them.

By the way, if you’re going to label your boxes, don’t let being in a rush cause you to put things in boxes that they don’t go in. The label on the outside should tell you what room each box goes to at your new house. However, that can’t happen if you pack stuff from the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen all in the same box.

Is moving stressful? Of course it is. Loading your life into the back of a moving truck and then unloading it is never going to be stress-free. But that stress doesn’t have to take over and cause you to miss the excitement that’s waiting for you.
